The leadership team at Options & Advocacy for McHenry County spent an afternoon coaching each other out loud, on real situations. The workshop was on turning a one-on-one into a coaching conversation. I had the opportunity to write and facilitate the training.
This team came up doing case management, counseling, and advocacy. Stepping in with the answer is the instinct that made them good at the work, and it is the hardest one to set down in front of the people you lead. Grateful for a group willing to do that kind of work together.
They left with a road map and a person they had already decided to try it with. What they said at the close: the practice is what will make them use it.
We met at the Philanthropy Center at The Community Foundation for McHenry County, which opens its space to local nonprofit partners. This helps you get out of your own office and set aside time to focus on improving as a team. That is exactly what this team did. An agency that spends a whole leadership team's afternoon on how its managers talk to people is making a choice about its people.
