After seven sessions, these midlevel nonprofit leaders know each other. They’ve built trust through shared challenges and honest conversations. In a “Partnership Expansion Lab” segment at our recent forum, we strengthened those relationships by translating connections into concrete benefits for the agencies they serve.
The “plus-one” model makes this happen. Partners pitch a specific service expansion challenge, and the cohort immediately mobilizes their “functional assets”: physical resources, key connections, and knowledge resources to provide solutions.
The results were tangible:
One I/DD agency struggling to find recreation ideas for day program clients received immediate suggestions including vetted restaurants.
Another agency needing specialized dental providers for their clients received referrals to dentists already working with similar populations.
A third agency facing high demand on their children’s counselors was connected to existing community resources.
This is what strengthens community nonprofits: relationships that generate concrete assets leaders can act on immediately to expand their services.
