I have found that intentionally focusing on the needs and experiences of others is a powerful way to gain perspective and stay grounded. The opportunity to serve, to connect with people from different backgrounds, and to contribute to a shared purpose larger than my own is incredibly meaningful. My inspiration for this comes from the words and actions of Jesus, who willingly chose “not to be served, but to serve” (Mark 10:45). Our communities flourish when we all contribute, and I am thankful for the chance to serve right here in my own.
Currently, I’m enjoying serving on three community boards:
- Bloomingdale Parks Foundation: This allows me to support youth and families’ access to recreational programming through scholarships.
- Northeast DuPage Family Youth Services (NEDFYS): I believe in NEDFYS as a vital community mental health agency. They provide critical services to families who often cannot afford them and also place social workers in local police stations.
- DuPage Youth Service Coalition (DYSC): I recently joined this board, which plays a crucial role in DuPage County by facilitating collaboration among member agencies (NEDFYS, Outreach, & 360 Youth Services).
This past summer, I also had the chance to volunteer with the middle school youth group at our church, which my own kids are now a part of. Serving students has been a key part of my professional experience, so it was especially meaningful to step in as a volunteer, simply show up, have fun, and connect with the students.
